"What draws people together at the pub to watch sports?"

BCM240 Research Project 2014

MEDIA | AUDIENCE | PLACE

BCM240 =

This project aims to research the dynamics of a hotel/bar that regularly shows sporting events to viewers. In an age of flat screen TVs, smart phones, tablets and devices - sport can be followed and accessed with great ease, and in the privacy and comfort of the family home. Yet watching the game or race at the pub is proving to be still as popular as ever.

Why are crowds drawn through the pub doors to sit on a stool, beer in hand, form guide in the other, to enjoy an afternoon of sport with the usual crowd? What excites people about communal sports viewing in a hotel environment? Is it just the beer factor?

This student-led project has used observation, surveys, interviews and content analysis in an effort to provide useful information regarding pub sports to a potential interested party - that of the NSW TAB.

And as for the answer? Take a look around this little site to check out the results and photos. This is television, with an audience, in a pub space. Media, Audience, Place!
