ABOUT THE ASSIGNMENT

Not just another student survey or school project.

NO BRAINER.

Aussie's just love their sport. Ask any foreigner to describe the average Australian and you will get two things for sure - beer and sport.

Combine the two and you have one of the most dedicated media relationships to survive the digital network age and rise of the internet - that of the bar and the big game or race.

So why are Australians continually drawn into a small space to watch their favourite code? Why the public viewing when a house with flat screen TV, home dinner and privacy waits?

"The project would aim to explore the research question by conducting surveys, observational research, interviews and some content analysis. Using photographs, written and online surveys and interviews, I planned to publish these results in a Flickr photo stream and finally present the results on a website.

The online survey received a moderate response, whilst the in-person survey I distributed to local clubs and handed out within the local area received a greater number of responses. 30 responders filled out surveys in person, and 10 responses were recorded online. Further, I interviewed the owner of Moss Vale Hotel, Tom Porter, for his business view on the topic, and a local bartender with 20 years of pub experience, Doug McVie.

The observational photographs and research was conducted over four weeks. I visited the three main TAB pub outlets in Moss Vale - the Moss Vale Hotel, Moss Vale Services Club and Jemmy Moss Inn to photograph, distribute surveys and observe the local presence, on busy Saturdays during a busy month of sport. This month was highlighted by the Horse Racing Spring Carnival, The Bathurst 1000 and Surfers Paradise Street Circuit , the Bledisloe Cup, International Cricket Tests and rugby league Four Nations competitions. Each observation period took around 3 hours"
